St Thomas
st john (trunk bay beach)
This is our FAVORITE place when we’re in St Thomas. Technically it is in St John (neighboring island with 60% of it protected as Virgin Islands National Park). Once we got off the ship at Havensight/West Indian Co. Dock (St Thomas), we took a taxi to Red Hook (~$10/p) then took the Ferry over to Cruz Bay, St John ($7/adult), and then another taxi from Cruz Bay (St John) to Trunk Bay Beach. One note: the ferry goes out on top of the hour (every hour).
First impression as soon as saw the beach: Wow it is GORGEOUS!! It is just as pretty as the professional pics you see. One of our ALL-TIME favorite beaches we’ve ever been to!!! Once we got there, we walked to the right side, almost to the end. There was hardly anyone there and had almost the whole section of the beach to ourselves. EXCELLENT Snorkeling. Saw fish as big as 3 foot big, and schools of fish all around me, all directions. Simply beautiful. We did not want to leave!! But we had to keep in mind all the taxi’ing and ferry back to not miss the ship (so we left at least earlier than normal to not take any chances).
Overall, lots of transport time (taxi’ing and ferry etc) but well worth it!!!
private beach & snorkel
We did a private excursion with a local company called St Thomas Adventures that was a ‘Private Beach and Snorkel’. It was only us and another family with us there. Beach was nice, calm, and hardly anyone there. I followed this turtle solo in St Thomas for a good 45 mins….. he would go closer to shore, then back out, then back closer to shore… it was so peaceful and beautiful. When I got back to shore I was telling our local/guide about him and my experience and he said ‘oh yeah, his name is Arnold, he comes visits us often’.
lindquist beach
On another cruise (porting in St Thomas) we decided to take a taxi to Lindquist beach close to the East side of the island ($10/person each way). When we got there we realized we were the ONLY ones at the beach and stayed that way for a good 2-3 hours until more people showed up then (still wasn’t crowded). It was only a few dollars per person to get in. A good alternative if looking for alternative to standard places like Magen and Coki’s (that gets a lot more crowded especially on cruise port days). Snorkeling wasn’t bad either, saw a 4 foot barracuda fairly close that scared the bejeebers out of me, and school of fish. Seaweed was pretty heavy during morning hours that day but in early afternoon somehow it most got cleared up. No restaurant or food shack there. $5/lounge chair rental, and a restroom/showers available.
